October 2014

Coming to grips with your mid-semester grades: Don’t Panic, Seek Advice!

October is typically when you will do your first serious self-analysis of how this semester’s classes are progressing. This is brought on by two events: the posting of mid-term grades and the deadline for withdrawing from a class.

Mid-term grades are due to the registrar from your professors on October 21. Professors will only report grades of D or below. These poor grades are then distributed to students within a day or two. If you don’t get any mid-term report from the registrar, that will indicate that you are passing all of your classes, though not perhaps with the grade you are hoping for. More important is if you do see a mid-term grade of D or F. My first piece of advice is more>>

The October mantra for sophomores is: Own It. 2017’ers, this is your month, full of opportunities to take charge of your college experience!

Major Meals on the 20-22nd is a chance to dine and chat with department reps and alumni from those areas, to help you choose a major. It’s a great opportunity in a casual setting; don’t miss it. October 10-12 is Alumni Weekend. Get out there and mingle with Alums.  Meet a grad, and make a connection. We love to talk to students; think internships & summer jobs. This is also the month that fraternities & sororities recruitment kicks off, and this is a great year to join a club that will give you friendships for a lifetime.

Career Services events follow a pattern

Have you ever noticed a pattern to the events hosted by Career Services? Kudos to you, if you have.

Events are lined up to demonstrate the typical process a student takes to find an internship or a full-time career position.

For instance, Resumania, a power critique of your resume, leads the pack this semester on October 1. It is followed by Interview Success on October 2, during which you’ll learn the ins and outs of interviewing from professional recruiters (yes, even for internships!). Then comes Professional Practice Interview Days from October 8-10, which is your chance to practice in a mock interview and get instant feedback.

All these events culminate in the Fall Career Fair on October 22, where your learning from each of the previous workshops comes into play. You’ll be ready with a polished resume in hand and you’ll know what to say to the recruiters at the career fair based on whether you’re there to learn about the company or to discover job shadowing, internship and job possibilities.
