It’s November and so that can only
mean one thing: Fall is once again not coming! I had hoped to escape the heat
of San Antonio, only to find that Redlands CA this year was even hotter than
South Texas.
But more seriously, November means
spring registration is nearly at hand. And this year you really need to be
serious about thinking through your plans. Many of you have already declared a
major and will be meeting with your new major advisor for the first time. It is
real important to have a thorough conversation with your new advisor about your
hopes and goals, and how your remaining years at Trinity can be best shaped to
meet these goals. Come to this meeting prepared, not just about classes for the
spring, but already to be thinking about what you might be taking next year.
This is especially important if you are planning on study abroad sometime in
the future. You and your advisor can walk through your next few semesters,
making sure you understand the courses needed for your major and the sequencing
of these classes.
If you have not declared a major, you
will be meeting with your same advisor as before. Be sure to talk with your
advisor about your thoughts regarding a major. Your advisor can help put you in
touch with professors in the departments you’re thinking about as a major to
help get you information, and maybe some details about what courses you might
be taking this spring. The best advice I can provide here is to talk with your
professors about what’s involved in the major and what you can do with that
degree after you graduate from Trinity. You should really declare a major by
February next year so that you can have a new advisor in that department to aid
you with your final two years at Trinity.
In terms of classes for the spring
semester, you should be thinking both about what classes are necessary for your
major and what to be taking to help satisfy the common curriculum. With the
common curriculum, it is not intended that you might finish this early, but you
certainly want to be making progress as you go along, so that your senior year
is not swamped with these courses.
You should be able to get into pretty
much every class you are interested in taking, so registration should go
smoothly, as long as you have a plan in place! So make you appointment with
your advisor as soon as possible.
