It’s
hard to believe that March has already arrived.
By now you’ve all established your academic and social rhythms and
learned to make good choices, established priorities and learned how to pace
yourself throughout the semester. So
let’s throw another challenge at you and inject the
mother-of-all-college-distractions into your first year of college: SPRING
BREAK! There’s nothing wrong with
enjoying some spring break fun, but if you’re planning to travel, particularly
to a popular college spring break location, take some simple, intelligent
precautions to make sure that what you intended to be a vacation doesn’t turn
out to wreck your school year or your life.
By now you’ve heard many of the warnings, but here are a few more spring
break tips, repeated from a popular college website, that you should pay
attention to:
•
Remember, impairment begins with the first drink. Choose not to drink if you are underage or
driving. If drinking is involved among
your companions always be safe with a designated driver.
•
Wear your seatbelt. Always. It’s your best protection in a crash.
•
Distracted driving is dangerous. Park the car to check mobile devices.
•
Respect other peoples’ right, and your own, to choose not to drink.
•
Respect state laws and campus policies.
•
Stay out of dangerous situations involving alcohol, whether in a car, bar or
bedroom.
•
If a friend drinks to the point of passing out, alcohol poisoning is a real
danger. If you’re concerned, seek medical attention. Better safe than sorry!
If
you’re looking for a service project this month we’d like to invite you to join
us at a local Habitat for Humanity build, sponsored by a local church at the
beginning of the month. It’s on Sunday,
March 2nd , framing 5 homes for local families in just 4 hours. Register now and e-mail us to let us know you’re
coming. We’ll be happy to buy lunch for
any of the class of 2017 who participate.
Or if you need a few other off-campus suggestions, there are two
sporting events you may want to check out. First there is the Valero Texas Open golf tournament,
March 24th-30th.
And for baseball fans there’s a two-game major league baseball
exhibition, The H-E-B Big League
Weekend on
the 28th & 29th, with a showdown between the state’s
two MLB teams, the Texas Rangers and Houston Astros. Check ‘em out!
Last, and most important, if you’re travelling
any distance over the break, please have a smart plan and a
reasonable schedule to get there and RETURN SAFELY! Fatigue can be as big of impairment to
driving as intoxication. We want you back on campus after the holiday, well
rested and ready to complete a fantastic semester.
