Welcome
back, ‘17’ers, and Happy New Year! We
hope you all had a nice winter break and are now well rested and ready to have
another great semester. We thoroughly
enjoyed seeing you and meeting more of you during December at the Vespers
service, the Tuttle’s home during the Oakmont holiday open-house
and, of course, the midnight pancake madness.
We’ve never seen a breakfast-for-500+ disappear so fast! I hope we’ll continue to meet and mingle
throughout the spring semester, particularly through some small group, off
campus opportunities that your RM’s should be telling you about soon.
So
you’ve now seen a semester from hellos to finals; it’s time to expand your
involvement and get active. There are
some great on-campus opportunities starting with Trinity’s Active
Student Organizations, check ‘em out, find the ones that fit, and consider
joining one or two. Service organizations, both on and
off campus, can always use some extra help in January; Trinity supports several
on campus, such as Alpha Phi Omega
and TUVAC. Ask your RM’s and other upperclassmen about
their favorite service activities at Trinity.
This semester will be your first opportunity to join one of Trinity’s
fraternities or sororities. Unlike most
fraternity & sorority communities, all but one fraternity and all sororities are local,
started at Trinity by Trinity students, with some groups dating back over 75
years. Being in a fraternity or sorority
at Trinity provides additional opportunities for leadership development, alumni networking, and service to the
Trinity and San Antonio communities, and creating lifelong friendships. If this is something that interests you, find
active members (look for the jerseys) and ask them why they joined and what
they like about Greek life. The same
goes for asking alumni (like us!).
January
is also a great month to see more of downtown San Antonio during a lull in
tourism. If you haven’t visited them
already, consider a tour of San Antonio’s Old Spanish Missions, before your
semester gets too busy. If you’re looking for a national observance
opportunity, there is a MLK Jr
Lecture on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 7:30 p.m. in Laurie Auditorium and a Martin
Luther King, Jr. March, on Monday, January 20 (meet at 8:30 a.m.
at the Bell Center). Would you like to
catch an NBA game? There are nine Spurs home games in January including games
on the 12th, 15th, 17th, 19th 22nd
and 29th. Or take a trip off
campus for some cheap-eats nearby. Here are a few alumni “favorites” if you
need suggestions: Joseph's
Storehouse Baking Company on N. St. Mary’s, Chris Madrids on Blanco, Tycoon Flats on N. St Mary’s or Hung
Fong on Broadway (check out the 48-star neon flag on the ceiling). Better yet, find your own favorites and tell
us about them.
Good
luck in the coming semester, and when you see us each on campus please stop us
for a chat, and tell us what’s going on in the lives of the Class of 2017.
